Al Barrow (Magnum): «Hemos grabado nuestro mejor disco»

Hemos tenido la suerte de poder hablar con Al Barrow, bajista de Magnum, que nos ha contado todo lo referente al nuevo disco de la banda. Esta es la entrevista.

– Hola Al y gracias por responder a esta entrevista. Llevas más de 15 años en Magnum, pero antes ya tocabas con Bob y con Tony. ¿Cómo describirías estos años y tu desarrollo como bajista?

Hola, es magnífico tomarse un descanso de los ensayos para responder a unas preguntas. Estamos muy ocupados con la promoción del disco y me alegra poder hablar contigo. Llevo un tiempo con los chicos. Les conocí cuando iban a salir de gira con Hard Rain. Es un proyecto que hicieron en los tiempos muertos de Magnum. Fue para mí un bautizo de fuego si tengo que ser sincero. La manera de tocar es distinta a la de grabar. Pasamos más tiempo en el bar que en el estudio y, probablemente, tomábamos demasiado antes de los conciertos. En aquellos tiempos era lo que se esperaba que hiciéramos. Parecía normal beber antes de los conciertos. Quizás tocábamos mal, pero era divertido. Hoy en día esto ha cambiado. Solo tomamos, Bob y yo, un poco de Jack Daniels para calentar la voz.
Después nos tomamos una cerveza pero el resto del día tomamos té o bebidas suaves. Hoy en día estamos más atentos a lo que hay que hacer en el escenario. Todo es más profesional. No podemos hacer lo mismo que antes. Tienes que estar a la altura de las circunstancias ya que mucha gente te grabará con el móvil en caso de que tengas un desliz.

Como bajista sí puedo decir que he mejorado, o al menos eso me gustaría pensar. Antes de ensayar con la banda me paso varias semanas conociendo la canción, tocándola. Incluso aquellas que llevamos tocando 15 años. La complacencia es un monstruo demasiado grande que debes combatir. Siempre piensas que te sabes esas canciones. Si caes en esa trampa metes la pata en serio. Me gusta controlarlo todo antes de tocar con el resto. Se acabó la actitud de que todo va a ir bien. O se está al 100% o nada. Somos una banda que trabajamos mucho para que cada concierto sea el mejor. La idea es que cada componente toque lo mejor posible. Al mismo tiempo hay que disfrutar. Si te aprendes las canciones puedes disfrutar sabiendo que tu trabajo está hecho. Cuando conocí a Tony y a Bob por primera vez estaba muy ocupado. Me estaba aprendiendo los discos de Rush y afrontaba la forma de tocar al estilo del rock progresivo.

Esto estaba muy bien y era divertido, pero Magnum me ha enseñado que no todo es el bajo sino que cada instrumento tiene su papel. Todo depende de la canción. Las líneas de bajo de Magnum son distintas, son más una base sobre la que construir algo. A veces las mejores líneas son las más sencillas. Puedo hacer escalas, pero lo importante es mantener un sonido sólido. Mi estilo ha cambiado para amoldarse a lo que el grupo me requiere. Es simple, pero melódico con algún momento virtuoso. También canto más que antes y eso me permite concentrarme en mantener la armonía con Bob. Siempre ha sido un punto importante en el sonido de Magnum, tener un buen nivel vocal en directo. En muchos casos hay armonías a 3 voces. Cuando ya controlo la parte del bajo, me concentro en cantar bien. Me encanta cantar y también encontrar el ritmo de la canción.

– La banda editará, a primeros de 2018, un nuevo disco. El último, Sacred Blood Divine Lies, fue bienvenido por los fans. ¿Qué podemos esperar de las nuevas canciones?

Bien, estamos muy nerviosos por este disco. Digo que cada disco que hemos editado ha sido honesto y ahora soy honesto y sincero cuando digo que creo que es el mejor disco que hemos grabado hasta la fecha. Tiene que ser así, hay que grabar lo mejor posible. Si no es así, te engañas tanto a ti como a los fans. El disco que mencionas fue magnífico y fue un desarrollo lógico que seguía la línea de otros discos. Siento que estamos en continuo crecimiento. El nuevo disco sonará algo distinto, pero en el buen sentido. Te lo aseguro. Tenemos un nuevo teclista y un nuevo batería. Rick Benton es el teclista. Cualquiera que conozca nuestro sonido sabe que los teclados tienen una vital importancia y que se integran en las canciones.

Esto significaba que teníamos que encontrar a alguien que pudiera tocar las canciones del pasado, pero también darle un nuevo giro al grupo sin que se notase. Era una fina línea y mucho trabajo. Rick ha encajado muy bien. Su forma de tocar es increíble. Le he visto grabar sus pistas y ha sido divertido. Le gusta añadir cosas a las canciones y a Tony le encanta eso. Llegaba con algo nuevo para incorporar y terminaba por cambiar la canción al completo. Hemos tenido un gran ambiente en el estudio, muy productivo.

Mark Stanway decidió tomar otro camino, le deseamos lo mejor pero teníamos que sustituirle con rapidez. Rick tuvo 2 días para aprenderse el repertorio. Su primer concierto fue desesperante para él, pero hizo bien su trabajo. Parecía que habíamos encontrado a la persona que buscábamos. Estamos felices de tenerle. Tenemos a Lee Morris, nuevo bateria. Le conozco desde hace años, pero nunca hemos tocado juntos. Cuando Harry James, el anterior percusionista, no pudo compaginar su trabajo en Thunder con el que hacía con nosotros le tuvimos que decir adiós y fue triste. Lee ha traído mucha personalidad. Es un entusiasta que llega a cansar (risas). Ama lo que hace y su entusiasmo nos ha contagiado a todos. Toca de forma distinta y nos llevó 2 conciertos adaptarnos a él. Tiene en su sonido una mezcla de muchos baterías que han pasado por el grupo. Tiene el toque sólido de Harry, los pies de Mickey Barker y el swing de Jimmy Copley. Es una gran mezcla y también tiene una serie de trucos que hacen que suene fresco. Para este disco hay novedades, pero siempre sonará a Magnum.

Resumiendo, coge tu disco favorito de Magnum, añade más rock, más sonido clásico y eso es lo que obtendrás. Incluso hemos grabado con una orquesta el tema que le da título al disco. Me pone los pelos de punta cuando escucho ese tema. No puedo esperar más, quiero que los fans la escuchen. También contamos con Rodney Matthews para la portada. El doble CD es una gran edición. 11 temas nuevos y un CD bonus con temas en directo que grabamos en España en un festival que hicimos en 2017.

– ¿Podrías escoger 3 temas del nuevo disco y explicar por qué crees que serán las favoritas de los fans?

Te diría la que le da título al disco, «Lost on the road to eternity». Es todo lo que Magnum ha intentado plasmar en su música. Gran letra, gran música y una producción con orquesta que la convierte en algo muy especial. «Welcome to the cosmic cabaret» tiene un feeling especial y grandes partes de teclados. Es un corte fuerte sin ser complejo. Me gusta la producción. La letra iguala a cualquier clásico de la banda. «Glory to ashes» tiene una gran vibración, un gran riff y me encanta la letra. Me gustan también los coros. Cuando entra la parte anterior al estribillo hay una parte brutal. También los teclados son magníficos. Ahora mismo no puedo escoger una favorita ya que todas son muy fuertes. Podría decirte que tocaría el disco entero en directo. Sería una paliza, pero muy divertida.

– ¿Cuál es el secreto de un grupo para seguir grabando discos tan buenos y seguir de gira de manera casi permanente?

Creo que todavía tenemos la pasión de editar nueva música. Magnum tiene ya garantizado un repertorio genial y tocar esos temas en directo es un sueño para mí. Creo que todos nos llevamos muy bien. Tendemos a darnos nuestro espacio en todo momento. Tenemos el mismo estúpido sentido del humor. Reírse mucho ayuda. Cuando pasas tanto tiempo con la misma gente siempre hay una tendencia a chocar unos con otros. Tras tantos años hemos tenido pocos problemas. Nos llevamos bien y creo que lo único que queremos hacer es tocar buena música para los fans. Tan simple como eso.

– El verano pasado tocásteis en España una vez más y el personal se quedó sorprendido gracias a vuestro concierto en el Leyendas del Rock. ¿Qué recuerdas de ese concierto?

¡Qué calor! (risas). Fue un show muy bien organizado. Estuve hablando con los fans antes del concierto y me encontré con gente maravillosa, todos querían pasarlo muy bien. No teníamos nuestro escenario de siempre, pero fuimos muy bien recibidos. Fue el mejor concierto de todos los festivales que hicimos. Fue un subidón. Todavía estaban adaptándose los chicos nuevos, pero en ese concierto comenzamos a sonar mejor. La vibración fue increíble y los fans cantaron todas las canciones. Fue increíble y tenemos muchas ganas de volver a España. Fue brillante.

– Volveréis en abril para presentar el nuevo disco. ¿Podrías adelantarnos algo del repertorio? ¿Cuántas canciones nuevas vais a incluir? ¿Qué clásicos podremos disfrutar en esos conciertos?

Me parece divertido que me preguntes esto. Acabo de recibir un correo en el que se me ha enviado el repertorio de la gira. Todavía tenemos que discutirlo, claro está. Volveré al Reino Unido en breve y escogeremos los temas. De momento, te adelanto que habrá 5 temas nuevos, habrá que decidir cuáles en breve. Habrá clásicos como «Vigilante» y «Les Morts Dansant» porque nos encantan y creo que los fans quieren escucharlas en directo y se sentirían decepcionados si no las incluyéramos.

– Gracias por tus amables respuestas. ¿Algún mensaje final para vuestros fans en España?

Gracias por haberme preguntado algunas preguntas brillantes. Tenemos ganas de compartir grandes noches con vosotros. Gracias por vuestro apoyo. Ahora, pedid el disco, es increíble, creedme, ¿pensáis que os engañaría?

– Hello Al and thank you so much for answering this interview. You´ve been more than 15 years with Magnum but you used to work with Bob and Tony before that. How would you describe these years and your development as a bass player?
Hello,
It`s great to take a moment from rehearsing and have a change of pace to answer a few questions. It`s great to do this as just before an album we all get very busy with interviews, so yes it`s great to speak to you.
I have been with the guys for a while now. I met Tony & Bob while they were about to take Hard Rain on the road. A project they had done between Magnum. It was a bit of a baptism by fire back then to be truthfully honest. The approach to playing and recording was very different. Let’s put it this way I think we spent more time in the bar than in the studio and probably had one too many before some shows. Looking back at the time it was what I suppose was expected. It did seem normal to have a few drinks before a show. We probably played really bad but it seemed a lot of fun at the time.
These days it`s a very different animal in many ways. The only drink we have now is one Jack Daniels for me and Bob to warm the throat. That’s it. Then after show we might have a cold beer but then the rest of the time it’s tea or soft drinks. So we are a lot more aware of what we are doing on stage and in the studio these days. The approach is much more professional. We can’t do what we did when we were younger. You have to be the top of your game these days as so many camera phones will capture anything slightly a miss.
So as far as my bass playing goes… well it`s improved I would like to think. I spend a few good weeks before getting to rehearsals going over the track making sure i know each song inside out. Even the ones we have been paying for 15 years. Complacency is a big monster you have to fight off. You think ..oh it will be ok i know that. If you fall into this trap you get caught out very quickly indeed. So I like to have everything sorted even before the band get together. There is no longer the “oh that will do” attitude. Has to be 100% or nothing. We are a band that works hard to make every show the very best. To get the best performance out of each member. But at the same time making sure we enjoy it. Learning every part of the song allows you to relax on stage and enjoy the night knowing you have done the hard work.
When I first met Tony & Bob I was a very busy bass player. I cut my teeth on learning every Rush album and having a very up front progressive approach to playing. This was ok and lots of fun to show off but one thing Magnum has taught me, it`s not about the bass, it`s not about any musical instrument in particular, it`s all about the song. So Magnum`s bass lines tend to take a different roll. A supportive roll. Sometimes the best lines are the simple lines that can let the song do it`s thing. I get my chance to run up and down the neck from time to time but mainly my roll is to keep it solid. So you could say my style has changed to fit with what Magnum requires from me. Simple but melodic with the odd moment of “pazazz” from time to time. I also sing a lot more these days so this does allow me to concentrate a bit on my pitching and harmonising with Bob. It`s always been a big thing with Magnum, to have good vocals live. Three parts harmonise a lot of the time. So once my bass parts have been learned and locked in I can then concentrate on getting the vocal side of things sorted. I do like to sing, but i do love to just sit back and find the groove.

– The band will release, at the beginning of 2018, a brand new album. The last one, Sacred blood divine lies, was welcome by the fans. What can we expect from the new songs?
Well we are very excited about this album. I do say that about every album we release and I am being honest and truthful when i say i think it’s the best we can do and the best we have done today. It has to be the best you can do, if not, you not only cheating yourself but the fans also. Sacred Blood was a great album and was a development of proceeding albums. We constantly grow I feel with each album.
With the new album it will sound a little different but in a good way I can assure you. As you may know by now we have a new keyboard player and drummer for this new album.
Rick Benton has taken up the roll of playing keyboards for us. Anyone who knows Magnum knows that Magnum have a quite extensive keyboard integration into their songs. So this meant we had to find a guy who could handle the past tunes but also bring his style to the band without changing it too much. A fine line and a lot to ask anyone to do. Rick has fitted in great. His calm approach to everything is great. I watched him recording his parts for this album and it was a lot of fun. He had a lot of input into the songs which Tony really liked. He would come up with parts and show them to Tony and it would at time complete change the song and send it off in different direction, it was a very exciting and productive atmosphere to be apart of.
Mark Stanway had decided to take another road and we wished him luck but we had to fill his role very quickly. As Mark left mid tour Rick had just a couple of days to learn the entire set. His first show with us must have been nerve racking for him but he just did his job and very well indeed. It showed instantly we had found our guy. We are happy to have him. We also have a new drummer, Lee Morris. I have known Lee many many years but never played in a band with him. He was asked to step in when Harry James`s diary got to full to do both Thunder and Magnum. It was sad but a choice had to be made and Lee was asked to step in. He brings a wonderful personality with him. He is almost annoyingly enthusiastic, lol. He absolutely loves what he does. His enthusiasm has been infectious and you can feel the energy in the band step up. It`s hard not to pick up on the vibe when he is about. His drumming style again is very different so it took a couple of live shows to really start to click. But once we figured each others styles out we just sat in the groove well together. He has a great mix of many of Magnum drummers. He has the solid power of Harry, the feet of Mickey Barker and the swing hats of Jimmy Copley. So it`s a great mix and he has a few great bag of tricks that keeps his performance real fresh. So for this album it will sound different in some aspect but as ever it will be very Magnum.
Lets put it this way…take your favourite Magnum and add more pomp, more rock…just a lot more Magnum and that’s what you will get. We even have a full orchestra on the title track of this album that makes the hairs stand on end each time I hear it. I can’t wait for it to get played to the fans. Also again great cover art by Rodney Matthews. It`s a great package. Double cd. Eleven new songs and a bonus cd with live performance recording from a festival we did in Spain in 2017.

– Could you choose 3 new songs and explain why do you think that will be the new favourite of the fans?
Straight off i would have to say the title track. Lost On The Road To Eternity. It`s everything that Magnum has personified in it`s music. Great lyrics, great music and not to mention the production with the full orchestra on this track really makes it something very special.
Welcome to the Cosmic Cabaret has a great feel. Lots of space for some great keyboards. It`s a strong track without being overly complex. I like the production on it. Lyrically it`s up there with any other Magnum track.
Glory to Ashes again has a great vibe to it. Spacious and a great guitar riff. I really love the lyrics on this track. I like the backing vocal also. I would like to do this track live. When the pre chorus hits it set the song up for a great chorus. Again some nice keys in there.
It`s hard to pick a favourite right now as they all seem very strong songs to me. I could see almost every one of them being played live. That would be some undertaking but lots of fun.

– What´s the secret of the band to keep on recording great albums and touring on a permanent basis?
I think we still have a passion for making new music. Granted Magnum have a fabulous back catalogue and to play some of them live is a real dream for me. I think we all get on very well with each other. We tend to know when being on the road or in the studio together we know when to give someone space. We also have the same stupid sense of humour. Laughing a lot helps. When ever you get people who have to spend a long time together day in and day out there will always be the odd clash. But over all the years there have been very few issues. We all get on and I think at the bottom of it all we just wanna play good music for deserving fans. Simple as that.

– Last summer you came back to Spain and really shocked the audience at Rock Fest Barcelona. What do your remember from that concert?
Hot weather!! lol
I recall it being a very well organised gig. i walked around the crowd before our show and met many many fantastic people, all ready to have a great time. We didn’t have a big tank to put the drums on but we were very well received. It was probably the high light as far as festivals go for me personally. I had a blast. We were still bedding in the new guys but it was really starting to click together on this show. The vibe of the show was great and it was nice to be seen by many Spanish fans again and they really sang their hearts out. It was very very cool and we are all looking forward to getting back out there soon. It was brilliant.

– You’ll be back in April to play once again and introduce us the new album. Can you tell us something about the setlist? How many new songs will you play? Which classics will we enjoy at that gigs?
Funny you ask that. I have just this moment received an email of the proposed 2018 set list. It`s still open to discussion of course. I will be back with the guy in the UK next week and we will discuss it in more detail. What I can tell you is that it looks like we will play 5 tracks from the new album, but which ones is still to be discussed in more detail. So if i told you the chances are it may change a lot by the time we get to the show itself.
There will be of course some of the classics. Some songs just can be left out of a Magnum show, so of course Vigilante and Les Morts Dansant will sure to get an airing. We love to play those songs and i think Magnum fans would be disappointed if they were not included.

– Thanks once again for your kind answers. Any final message for your Spanish fans?

So thank you very much for taking the time to ask me some great questions. We can’t wait to get back over there to share some great nights with you all, thank you for having us, and thank you for all your continued support. Now go order the album, it`s great trust me, would I lie to you?
