Erja Lyytinen nos cuenta las claves de Smell the roses

Erja Lyytinen acaba de editar Smell the roses, un disco de rock y blues clásico que merece toda tu atención. Ella misma nos cuenta las claves del álbum.

– ¿Cuándo comenzaste a componer las canciones del disco? ¿Tenías algún objetivo con este disco?

La primera que compuse fue «Abyss» a principios de 2022. Estaba harta de lo que me rodeaba y me sentí un poco melancólica. Usé esa emoción para componer el tema. Cuando la gente te da la espalda caes en un abismo profundo y oscuro. La canción es la más dura de todas las que he escrito y me encanta porque captura mis emociones. Los otros ocho cortes los compuse en 2024. Todo salió en un periodo de tiempo relativamente corto.

– La mayoría de los temas tienen su base en el rock clásico de los 70, aunque también hay pinceladas de rock moderno. ¿Cómo mantienes el equilibrio entre ambos sonidos?

Quería crear una sensación de sonido en directo para el disco porque en la actualidad todo el mundo graba sus discos en su casa y luego encajan las piezas de cada músico. Quería grabar un disco orgánico de rock y blues y lo grabamos todos juntos en el estudio. Luego, metí algunas guitarras y algunas voces. Mi ingeniero de sonido consiguió ese sonido fresco que equilibra el que tiene una banda moderna de rock del presente siglo con el de los 60 o 70 que sigo escuchando en vinilo. Bandas como Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Yes, ELP…Me encanta su material de esas décadas. Cuando estaba grabando el disco siempre intenté meter algo distinto y actualizar mi sonido.

– Me alegra mucho comprobar que todas las canciones giran en torno a un riff y que no intentas demostrar lo bien que tocas la guitarra prefiriendo componer una canción buena. ¿Crees que hay muchos imitadores de Van Halen por ahí que están más preocupados en demostrar sus habilidades y no en componer una buena canción?

Me importan muchísimo las canciones y siempre quiero contar historias con ellas. No me gusta el shredding, sino generar emociones. Es cierto que me pongo retos como guitarrista, ya que nunca dejo de desarrollar mi estilo. Sin embargo, no me voy a poner demostrar lo bien que toco la guitarra, prefiero pensar en toda la canción y en cómo sonará. Creo que cada músico necesita decidir qué quiere editar o contar con su música. Algunos prefieren demostrar lo buenos que son y me parece bien si esto es lo que quieren ellos y sus seguidores. Para mí esto también va de enviar un mensaje en cada canción.

– ¿Qué grupos te han inspirado a la hora de componer los temas del disco?

Mientras componía no escuchaba a ningún grupo concreto. De hecho, no escuchaba apenas música porque mi cabeza estaba llena de ideas. El año 2024 fue muy productivo para mí, las canciones no paraban de surgir, las ideas siempre estaban ahí y me despertaba con ideas para más canciones. Por ejemplo, los temas «Ball and chain» y «Wings to fly» surgieron a mitad de la noche. ¡No hay descanso para los malvados!

– ¿Cómo compones? ¿Tienes una grabadora en la mesita de noche como Zappa o necesitas más tiempo para crear una canción?

Zappa tenía una grabadora y los modernos tenemos un teléfono móvil. Si no hubiera tenido un teléfono móvil a mano habría perdido un montón de ideas. A veces, cuando estás a punto de dormirte te surgen ideas o en la mitad de la noche. También me vienen ideas cuando hago una ruta de senderismo por los bosques. Creo que tiene que ver con que necesito estar en un espacio tranquilo antes de que surjan las ideas. Siempre intento buscar algo de serenidad en medio de una frenética agenda de conciertos y evitar el uso excesivo de las redes sociales o ver las noticias. Ocasionalmente, necesito alejarme de todo eso para ser creativa.

– Por favor, elige tres temas del disco que consideras que alguien que no te conoce debería escuchar para descubrir tu forma de entender la música.

«The Ring», «Dragonfly» y «Smell the Roses» son tres temas buenos para conocerme. Toco el slide en la primera y creo que es por lo que soy más conocida. Lo de volverme loca con el slide en este tema rápido es perfecto. También he editado un vídeo en mi canal de Youtube Erjalyytinenofficial.

Creo que «Dragonfly» es más pop y he notado que algunas de mis canciones tienen acordes más comerciales y partes más tranquilas como sucede en este tema. Lo de encontrarse una libélula en el bosque cuando huyes de un mundo negativo y de las malas palabras es un mensaje más profundo. El medioambiente ha sido tan explotado que te dan pena estas pequeñas criaturas.

También el tema que le da título al disco es rápido, fresco y tiene distintos pasajes. Normalmente, me aburro y me gusta meter algo distinto en la parte central.

– ¿Qué podemos esperar de tus próximos conciertos?

Tocamos el disco entero porque las canciones tiene mucho ritmo y el repertorio es más potente. Me gusta darlo todo en el escenario y entretener a la gente. Todos vamos a los conciertos a pasarlo bien. El repertorio incluye temas más antiguos como «Wedding day» (que dura 10 minutos porque meto un solo de guitarra en el que improviso) y «You talk dirty» que tiene un riff potente con un doble tempo al final.

– When did you start to write the songs of Smell the roses? Did you have any goal to achieve with the album?
The first song I wrote for Smell the Roses – album, was Abyss
and this was in the beginning of 2022. I was fed up with some
stuff happening, and felt a bit melancholic. So, I used that emotion for the song «Abyss». When you´ve been let down by punch of a people, you fall deeper to the darkness. The song became the
heaviest song I´d ever written and I like this one a lot, it really
captures those emotions and is such a heavy song! The other 8
tracks I wrote during 2024, so all these songs really came out
quite in a short time being.

– Most of the songs sound like classic rock from the seventies, although there´s some touches of modern rock. How do you keep the balance between both sounds?

I wanted to create a live feel for the album track, because
nowadays people record stuff by themselves in their home
studios, and all is puzzled together. I wanted to make an organic
rock/blues album, so we recorded all the backing tracks
simultaneously and then I recorded some of my guitars and
vocals later on. My mixing engineer gave this fresh sound for the
album, it has the feel of both worlds, the modern rock of 21 st
century, but also those rock/progressive bands of late 60´s and
early 70´s which I keep on listening at home from vinyls. Bands
like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Yes, ELP.. I love their stuff from
that time area. But while making the album, I always trying to
bring something new along with it, trying to keep up with modern
times too.

– It´s quite a joy to check that all the songs turn around a main riff and that you don´t try to show how good you are and prefer to write an awesome song. Do you think that there are too many Van Halen wannabes more focused on showing their skills instead of playing nice tunes?

For me the songs really matter the most. I want to tell stories too. Not just shred all the time, but bring emotions to the songs. I like challenging myself as a guitarist too. I try to improve my playing on each of the album I make. It´s also important for me to develop as a guitarist. But I wouldn’t just want to show off for the sake of it, but rather think of the whole song, how it will sound in the end. I think every musician need to decide themselves, what they want to put out, what they want to tell with their music. Some guitarists want to show off their skills, but why not, if it pleases them and some listeners. But for me it´s also about the songs and the message on each track.

– What bands have inspired you to write the song of the album? 

While writing the album, I wasn´t particularly listening to any
specific bands. Actually, I wasn´t listening too much of a music
that time, as my head was full of ideas anyway! Year 2024 was
really productive for me, the songs were just pouring out, the
ideas were flowing and sometimes I woke up in the middle of the
night to a song idea. For example, the songs «Ball and Chain» and
«Wings to Fly» came in the middle of the night. No rest for wicked!

– How do you write? Is it like Zappa that used to have a recorder
beside his bed to catch the melodies asap or you need more
time?

Zappa use to have a recorder next to his bed, we modern
songwriters nowadays have mobile phones next to our beds. I
would have missed many ideas, if I couldn´t record to my mobile
phone instantly when the idea comes up. Sometimes right before
you´re getting into bed, ideas come out. Or in the middle of the
night. I do also get a lot of song ideas on my hiking trips to
forests. It does tell a lot about that fact, that I need to have a quiet and peace, before the ideas start to pour. So, I´m trying to seek serenity between hectic touring schedule and overflow of social media and information. You need to step out occasionally from all the hassle to able to be creative.

– Please choose three songs of the album that you think that
someone that doesn´t know your sound should listen.

“The Ring”, “Dragonfly” and “Smell the Roses” are good songs to
start with. I´m playing slide guitar on The Ring, and it´s kind of my thing that I´m known off! Being crazy with slide playing, this up-tempo track is perfect for my slide! There is also music video at erjalyytinenofficial Youtube channel for the song. “Dragonfly” has more pop approach and I´ve noticed that some of my songs have
these beautiful etheric chords and calm sections, like this song
has. But it has a deep story, meeting a dragonfly in the forest, to
where you have escaped the bad world and the bad words. But
the Nature´s been exploited and you feel sorry for the Nature and
to its little creatures. “Smell the Roses” is another up-tempo song
and feels fresh and has a few different parts on the song. I get
bored easily and usually like to have C – part or bridge in the
song to have interesting new things coming up in the song.

– What can we expect from your next concerts?

We have been playing the full album on the concerts. And as the
new tracks are quite up-tempo, the setlist is very energetic too!
And that´s great, because I like to give everything on stage and
entertain people. We all come to the gigs to have fun! The setlist
includes some of my older songs too, like “Wedding Day” and
“You Talk Dirty”, which are great live tracks, “Wedding Day” being
about 10 minutes long with an improvisational guitar solo and “You Talk Dirty” this heavy riff-laden song with a double tempo
towards the end.
