Hypnos: «Ya es hora de que volvamos a tocar a España», entrevista en exclusiva para Miusyk

Tras haber criticado su último disco, nobleza obliga y decidimos entrevistar a la banda escandinava para que nos contasen los secretos de su éxito. Esto es lo que nos contaron. (English version at the end of the Spanish one)

– Gracias por contestar a nuestra entrevista. Tras escuchar GBG Sessions es fácil concluir que vuestro estilo está anclado en la década de los 70 del siglo XX, pero también mira hacia el futuro. Esto va más allá de las bandas de «corta y pega». ¿Cómo encontráis el equilibrio entre vuestras influencias y vuestro propio estilo?

Creo que queremos hacer algo que sirva para algo y que sea nuevo, incluso aunque la música tenga sus raíces en los 70. Imagino que lo fácil es copiar algo que se ha hecho antes, pero para nosotros es más divertido intentar hacer algo nuevo e interesante.

– «Hand of evil» es una de las canciones que se han vuelto a grabar para este disco. Tenía antes una influencia muy clara de Jethro Tull y de Black Sabbath aunque ahora es más poderosa. ¿Cómo fue hacer esta versión de vuestra canción?

Es una gran canción para tocar. Linus confirma su talento en ella. Creo que queríamos hacer algo más heavy y demostrarnos que todavía cuidamos nuestro material antiguo.

-«Nightmares» y «Ain’t no fool» son casi un tributo a Deep Purple y bandas similares. ¿Qué nos podéis añadir al respecto? ¿Es Blackmore una influencia para los guitarristas de la banda?

Lo es tanto para mí como para Pontus (compositor y guitarrista). Su forma de tocar sigue teniendo vigencia. El primer tema que mencionas es una mezcla entre el blues de siempre y algo más cañero, es uno de mis cortes favoritos. La otra canción fue la primera que compuse para la banda y creo que mezcla mi estilo con el del grupo. Es muy divertida de tocar.

– Mi tema favorito es «The Mountain». ¿Cómo sois capaces de mezclar bandas como Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden o Diamond Head en esta canción?

Me alegra de que te guste. Creo que se trata de estar en esa zona sonora. Los temas del primer disco estaban en periodo de composición cuando surgió la idea de esta canción. Todo el mundo comenzó a aportar ideas, cogimos las que más nos gustaron. No creo que decidiéramos que tuviera una dirección concreta, trabajamos para lograr una gran canción.

– La versión de «Gimme me Gimme me» debería ser un gran single. ¿Fue una broma o solo queríais mostrar otra arista de vuestro sonido?

No creo que fuera una broma (Risas). Queríamos hacer una versión y teníamos ideas distintas. Era divertida y un gran tema de Abba. Muestra otra cara de nuestro grupo.

– ¿Qué podemos esperar en vuestros conciertos?¿Tocáis versiones?

Ahora mismo estamos de promoción del disco y tocaremos temas de este trabajo, algo de Cold Winds y ¿quién sabe? Quizá toquemos algo divertido. Siempre intentamos que todo suene fresco e interesante, la idea es cambiar las canciones y tocar versiones de vez en cuando.

– ¿Habéis tocado en España? ¿Os gustaría?

Sí, al principio de nuestra carrera y lo pasamos en grande. Creo que fueron como dos semanas en 2015. Creo que ha llegado el momento de volver y esperamos hacerlo a finales de año.

– ¿Cuál es vuestra meta final? ¿Dónde veis a la banda en 2020?

Es complicado saberlo, pero queremos tocar más y para más gente. Nos encanta tocar en directo y encontrarnos con personas maravillosas. Con suerte, nuestro nombre estará en los labios de más gente y podremos seguir editando más música.

– ¿Puedes enviar un mensaje a tus fans españoles?

Tenemos un gran pacto de amor con todos nuestros fans en España. Gracias por vuestro apoyo, por escucharnos y por venir a nuestros conciertos. Sois maravillosos. ¡Esperamos veros a final de año!

ENGLISH VERSION

– Thank you so much for answering this interview. After listening GBG Sessions is easy to recognize that your style comes from the 70’s but it also looks to the future. This goes far beyond than the typical cut and paste of other bands. How do you find the balance between your influences and your own style?

I think we want to do something that stands out and feels new, even though the music and sound undoubtley has its roots in the 70’s. So, yes,I guess the easy way would be to just «copy» something that has been done but to us it is just much more fun to try to do something that is new and intresting.

– «Hand of evil » is one of the songs that have been re-recorded for the album. It used to have a kind of Jethro Tull-Black Sabbath inspiration though now is more powerful. How was it to cover the original tune?

It is simply a reat song and a treat to play! Linus really shows off his talents on this one. I think we wanted to make it more of a heavy song and also show everyone that has listened to us before that we still very much love and take care of the old stuff!

-«Nightmares» and «Ain’t no fool» are almost a tribute to bands like Deep Purple and similar ones. Can you tell us more about these songs? Is Ritchie Blackmore an influence for the guitarists of the band?

Ritchie Blackmore is certainly a big influence on me (Pontus, both as a guitarist and as a songwriter. His power and prowess still stand out. Nightmares is sort of a mix between good old blues and some heavy shuffle and is one of my personal favourites. Ain’t No Fool was my first contribution to the band and I think it sort of blends my style with the Hypnos sound quite well. It is also a fun song to play.

– My fauvorite one is «The Mountain». How did you get to the point to melt influences from bands like Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden or Diamond Head on this one?

Glad to hear that you enjoy it! It is all about being in the zone I suppose. The songs for the first album were being worked with and the idea for The Mountain came about. So everyone started throwing ideas out, we took the ones we liked the most and there the outlines were. I don’t think we really decided that it was going to go a certain way, we just worked towards writing a really good song!

– The cover of «Gimme me Gimme me» should be a hit single. Was it a joke or you did this one on purpose just to show another side of the coin?

I wouldn’t call it a joke, haha! We wanted to do a cover and had some different ideas. Gimme was fun to play, is a great song and it’s Abba, so there was no other way! And yeah, it also shows a somewhat different side of us as well.

– What can we expect in your concerts? Do you play any cover?

Right now we mostly play stuff to promote the GBG Sessions album so there will be songs from that one, some other songs from Cold Winds and who knows..? Maybe something fun might show up! We always try to keep both songs and live shows fresh and intresting so we always change out songs and play covers from time to time.

– Have you ever play in Spain? Would you like to?

We played there early in Hypnos’ career and had a heck of a good time! I belive it was for two weeks back in 2015. So we really feel that it is getting time to return and we are hopefully coming back later this year!

– What´s your final goal? Where do you see the band in 2020?

Final goals are hard to predict, but surely we want to get out and play more and for more people. We love playing live and meeting wonderful people! Hopefully our name will be on more peoples lips and we’ve been able to release more great music.

– Can you send a message to your Spanish fans?

We have a great deal of love for all our Spanish fans! Thank you for supporting us, listening to our music and coming to our gigs! You are all wonderful. Hope to see you all later this year!
