YYNOT: «Sería un sueño tocar en España»

Hablamos con Billy (guitarra, teclados y coros) de YYNOT que nos comenta cómo se encuentra la banda tras haber editado su primer disco titulado de forma homónima. Este trabajo nos sorprendió gratamente y nos decidimos a entrevistar al grupo para que nos desgranase todos los detalles al respecto. En la noticia extendida tienes la entrevista al completo.

– Ante todo, muchas gracias por concedernos esta entrevista. Tras la edición de vuestro primer disco en junio cada vez sois más populares. ¿Qué piensas de este disco y cómo ha sido aceptado por vuestros fans?

La verdad es que estamos encantados con el disco y siento que hemos captado mucho de lo que hacemos. La reacción de los fans fue impresionante. Nunca soñamos que podríamos vender el disco en todo el mundo. Los fans no solo lo han aceptado, también entienden lo que queremos trasmitir con la música.

– El disco es muy interesante debido a la mezcla de temas rápidos, medios tiempos y a ese toque de los 80, pero con los beneficios de la tecnología del siglo XXI. Cada tema es un trabajo inmenso. ¿Cómo componéis normalmente? ¿Primero las letras y luego la música?

No tengo un método concreto. A veces es una idea de algo que quiero expresa, otras es u título y me siento con la guitarra o con el bajo a trabajar en músicas que tengan relación con las letras. Otras veces, es al revés. Llegó con un riff que me gusta y me pregunto de qué va la canción dependiendo de la actitud y del sentimiento que me genere esa melodía.

– ¿Podrías comentarnos cuáles son tus temas favoritos del CD?

Es muy complicado escoger los temas favoritos ya que cada persona tendrá los suyos. El resto de componentes tendrán su propia respuesta, pero imagino que uno de ellos es «Invisible Heart» porque creo que no tengo esa sensación de que la podría haber tocado mejor. «Hourglass» la disfruto mucho en directo o «Etheria». Esas dos son un reto y disfruto mucho tocándolas.

– ¿Cómo va la gira? ¿Tenéis planes de tocar en Europa? ¿Os gustaría tocar en España? ¿Tocáis este disco en su totalidad o también añadís otros temas?

Estamos dando conciertos aquí y allí hasta que alguien nos permita dar el salto para hacer algo más importante. Nos encantaría tocar en Europa y, por supuesto, hacerlo en España sería un sueño.Tocamos muchos temas del disco y también algunas canciones de Rush que es por lo que más se nos conoce.

– Para mucha gente equivocada, no dejáis de ser una banda de tributo de Rush que ha intentado sacarle partido a los tics de esta banda para convertirse en un grupo más conocido. Recientemente has comentado esto. ¿Podrías explicárselo mejor, de una vez por todas, a los que piensan así?

Bien, puedo ver cómo muchos siguen pensando así, pero todo eso es el resultado de un accidente. Llevo toda mi vida componiendo música. No había tocado una canción de Rush desde que era un crío. Fui a verles en su última gira y me entró la nostalgia. Me di cuenta de que, a pesar de no haber grabado mucha música propia, el grupo había dejado en mí su influencia y quise hacer algo al respecto. Compuse y grabé un corte instrumental con un gran batería amigo mío.. La idea era hacer algo que contuviera las referencias de sus primeros discos. En realidad, solo quise hacerlo por placer personal y para que si tengo hijos algún día pudieran escuchar algo más digno que mis viejas maquetas. El tema se llama «YYNOT», una especie de juego con «YYZ» (una de las instrumentales más conocidas de Rush), ya que no dejaba de ser un guiño y un reconocimiento a la banda, pero sin pretender que fuera algo más serio.

La gente la escuchó y le gustó. Cuando vi a Tim (bajista del grupo) haciendo versiones de Rush en Internet intenté tocar este tema con él. Le pregunté si podía regrabar el bajo. Así empezó todo. Después decidí componer canciones y pensé que sería interesante darles ese estilo y arreglarlas bajo esa influencia. Una vez más, si a la gente no les gustaba siempre podía seguir tocando para divertirme y seguir siendo un compositor y un productor para otros géneros musicales.

– ¿Cuáles son los planes del grupo para 2019?

Tocar en directo y posiblemente comenzar a grabar un nuevo disco.

– Gracias por responder a estas preguntas. ¿Algún mensaje para tus fans españoles?

Gracias por vuestro apoyo. Esperamos ir a tocar a vuestro país y veros muy pronto.

-First of all, thank you so much for answering this interview. You released your debut álbum in June and it´s getting more and more popular. What do you think about your work and how has it been accepted by your fans?

We are very pleased with the record and feel that it captures a lot of what we do. The reaction from fans has been overwhelming. We never dreamed that we’d be selling the record all over the country as well as all over the world in so many different countries. Fans have not only been very accepting of it, but also really get what we were trying to do.

-The record is quite interesting due to the mix of fast songs, slow songs and a touch of the 80’s sound but with the benefits of the XXI Century. There´s a huge work in each song, how do you compose? Lyrics first and then the music? The other way round?

I don’t have one set method for writing. Sometimes it might just start with an idea of something I want to say lyrically, other times I have a title and then sit down with a guitar or a bass and start working on ideas that speak to the lyrical theme. Other times it’s the other way around; where I’ll come up with a riff that excites me and then ask myeslef “ok, what is this song about?” based off of the attitude or the feel.

-Can you tell us which are your fauvorite songs of the CD?

It’s very difficult to pick favorites for me since they are each my favorites for different reasons lol. The other band members might have their own answers but I guess if I really had to pick it would be “Invisible Heart” because nothing really bugs me about it like I could have done this better or that. My most enjoybale one to play live is probably “Hourglass” or “Etheria”. Those two are so challenging and enjoyable to play.

-How is it going with your tour? Any plan to play in Europe? Would you like to play in Spain ever? Do you play this album completely and then add any other song?

We are really only doing shows here and there until something or someone comes along to give us a boost to be able to do more. We would love to play in Europe and of course Spain would be a dream to play! We play many of the songs from the álbum as well as some Rush material since we are also known for that.

-For many, and wrong, people you are just a Rush tribute band that has capitalized of the Rushisms to get known. You´ve been talking about this recently. Can you explain this matter, once again and once for all, to those than think this way?

Well I could see how some people might think that but the truth is all of this happened by accident. I have been an original songwriter/musician for most of my career. I hadn’t even played a Rush song since I was a kid. While I was watching Rush on their last tour I started getting nostalgic and realized I didin’t really have much recorded over the years that showed thier influence on me and since it was so important and profound to me as a boy, I wanted to do something. So I composed and recorded an instrumental with a great drummer friend of mine. The idea was to compose something but with very overt references to a few of their early records. I really only intended to do it for my own enjoyment and maybe to have for if I ever had kids someday they’d hear something better tan just an old cassette of my original stuff in the old days. I called the song “YYNOT” as a play off the “YYZ” title as well as to show that I was doing it as an honorable wink and a nod but not to take so seriously.
People Heard it and liked it. When I saw Tim doing Rush covers on the ineternet I wanted to try that with him. Then I asked him to re-record my bass parts on the song. So that’s really how it all started. So once I decided to keep writing but really write songs, I thought it only made sense to stylize them and arrange them in the same vein. Again, if people didn’t like them so much I probably would have been content to keep to the covers for fun and continue as a songwriter and producer as I had been in other genres.

– Any future plans for the band in 2019?

Yes, more live shows and maybe start working on another record.
