Hemos tenido el placer de entrevistar a Tony Clarkin que nos adelanta las claves del nuevo disco de Magnum.

Hola Tony y gracias por responder esta entrevista. Antes de que hablemos del nuevo álbum, ¿qué dirías sobre el álbum y la gira de The Monster Roars?

Todo fue una experiencia agradable. Especialmente, el reencuentro con Gotthard después de tantos años. Mientras celebrábamos nuestro 50 aniversario. Había pasado mucho tiempo.

Después de décadas en la industria musical, ¿cómo encuentras la inspiración para escribir nuevas canciones? ¿Sientes la necesidad de tocar nuevos riffs o es algo natural? ¿Escribes la canción completa o es más bien una especie de cortar y pegar diferentes partes mientras compones?

Siempre busco inspiración principalmente cuando estoy en casa. Continuamente escribo letras y música y elijo las que creo que son las mejores. A veces es muy rápido y otras pueden llevar semanas.

Después del single «Blue Tango» algunos fans dijeron que es una especie de volver al principio y otros dicen que suena a Status Quo. ¿Qué piensas sobre esto y cómo escribiste esta canción?

Sí, «Blue Tango» es un tema bastante nostálgico. Me llevó de regreso a los primeros días e incluso a mi primera banda.

¿Qué podemos esperar de Here comes the rain? ¿Es el sonido clásico de la banda o está más relacionado con los últimos álbumes? ¿Puedes contarnos cuáles son tus canciones favoritas?

Sí, es el sonido clásico de Magnum. Hay un buen trabajo de teclado de Rick Benton. Gran bajo de Dennis Ward. Especialmente en «Broken city». Y la batería de Lee simplemente lo une todo. En cuanto a una canción favorita, no tengo ninguna.

¿Cuántas canciones del álbum tocaréis durante la próxima gira? ¿Tenéis planes respecto a tocar en España?

Hemos propuesto cuatro nuevas canciones para la gira. En cuanto a tocar en España, ¿tal vez nos lo pidan en la temporada de festivales?

Siempre estuviste al margen de los guitar heroes. Sin shredding, sin temas demasiado rápidos y sin pose alguna. ¿Te sientes subestimado de alguna manera?

No, porque Magnum no se trata de eso.

¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre la escena del rock actual? ¿Creéis que las nuevas bandas sustituirán a los grandes nombres? ¿Hay alguna banda nueva que te guste?

Hoy en día tiene más aceptación que cuando empezamos. Es un mercado muy especializado y nunca obtiene el respaldo que obtienen las bandas de pop. Nothing but Thieves es una banda de rock joven que es genial.

Spotify está en el candelero en este momento. ¿Estás de acuerdo con los términos de la plataforma o sería bueno encontrar otra manera de ganar dinero con tu música?

Siempre es bueno encontrar otras vías para la difusión y, por supuesto, para que te paguen por tu música.

Bob me dijo hace años que mientras encuentres cierto interés por parte de SPV para lanzar tus álbumes y los promotores te llamen para tocar, seguirás adelante. ¿Hay alguna fecha para organizar una gira final o queréis seguir un tiempo?

¡Aún no hay fecha! Simplemente seguimos adelante.

Gracias de nuevo por tus respuestas. ¿Algún mensaje para tus fans españoles?

Que ojalá nos veamos pronto y agradecerles por su apoyo durante tantos años.

Hi Tony and thank you for answering this interview. Before that we talk about the new album, what would you say about The monster roars album and tour?

The whole thing was an enjoyable experience. Meeting up with Gotthard after so many years. As we were celebrating our 50th Anniversary. It had been a long time.

After decades in music industry how do you find the inspiration to write new songs? Do you feel the urge to play new riffs or is just natural? Do you write the whole song or is it more a kind of cut and paste of different parts while you write?

I am always looking for inspiration mainly when I’m at home. I continually write lyrics and music and I pick the ones I think are the best. Sometimes it’s really quick then others can take weeks.

After the single «Blue Tango» some fans said that is a kind of going back to the beggining and others say that it sounds like Status Quo. What do you think about this and how did you write this song?

Yes Blue Tango was quite a nostalgic track. It took me back to the early days. In fact to my first band.

What can we expect from Here comes the rain? Is it the classic sound from the band or is it more related with the last albums? Can you tell us your favorite songs?

Yes it is the classic sound of Magnum. There is some nice keyboard work from Rick Benton. Great Bass from Dennis Ward. Especially in Broken City. And Lee’s Drums just bring everything together. As for a favourite track, I don’t have one.

How many songs of the album will you play during the next tour? Any plan about playing in Spain?

4 new tracks are proposed for the tour. As for playing in Spain, Maybe we will be asked in the Festival season?

You always been aside of the guitar heroes. No shredding, no fast stuff and no pose at all. Do you feel underrrated in some way?

No, because that’s not what Magnum are about.

What´s your opinion about the actual rock scene? Do you think that the new bands will replace to the big names? Is there any new band that you like?

It’s more accepted nowadays than when we started out. It’s a very niche market and never get the backing that pop bands do. Nothing but Thieves are a young Rock Band that are pretty cool.

Spotify is on the spot at the moment. Do you agree with the terms of it or it would be nice to find another way or earning money with your music?

It’s always good to find other avenues for airplay and of course to be paid.

Bob told me years ago that while you find some interest from SPV to release your albums and promotors call you to play you will keep on. Is there any date to organize a final tour or you want to keep on for a while?

No date as of yet! We just keep going.
